During the winter of 2025, more than eighty Camden residents participated in the Curtis Island Community Visioning process.  Two workshops were held, and many others completed the Visioning Survey Workbook on the our website, all answering these three questions:

Thinking ahead 5 years, what is your vision for Curtis Island?

When you think of Curtis Island, what do you cherish or are most proud of?

What are your worries and concerns?

Each participant’s written thoughts were transcribed, and common “themes” emerged from each question. From this, a collective vision was formed.  This report shares the most frequently stated themes from each question with direct quotes from participants. The Curtis Island Lighthouse Foundation continues to welcome individual vision statements which become the foundation from which the preservation and restoration of the Curtis Island Light Station emerges. Collective Community Vision of Curtis Island—In Five Years…

Curtis Island Light Station stands as a beacon of serenity, history, and community spirit, cherished by the people of Camden and beyond. Our vision for the future of Curtis Island is rooted in the preservation of its natural beauty, historical significance, and the unique sense of tranquility it offers. We will maintain the island as a sanctuary where the past and present coexist harmoniously, providing a peaceful retreat for reflection and connection with nature.

We envision Curtis Island as a place where the historical structures, including the iconic lighthouse, are preserved and restored. These buildings will serve as living museums, offering insights into the maritime heritage of Camden and the lives of the lighthouse keepers who once tended the light. Through careful restoration, we will ensure that these structures remain a testament to the island's rich history, accessible to all who wish to learn and appreciate their significance.

Access to Curtis Island will be thoughtfully managed to maintain its serenity and prevent overuse. We will promote sustainable practices, encouraging visitors to reach the island through non-motorized means, preserving its peaceful atmosphere. By limiting the number of visitors and ensuring that access is respectful of the island's natural environment, we will protect its fragile ecosystems and ensure that Curtis Island remains a haven for wildlife and a place of solitude for all who visit.

Education and community involvement are central to our vision. We will foster a strong educational component, offering programs that engage school children, historians, and community members in the island's stewardship. Curtis Island will become a place of learning, where the importance of conservation, global warming, and historic preservation is shared with future generations. To ensure everyone has the chance to experience the island, transportation for local residents who do not have access to small boat transportation will be transported to island on selected days during the summer. Through these planned island trips, volunteer opportunities, and community-led initiatives, a sense of shared responsibility and pride in the island's upkeep will be cultivated.

Financial sustainability is crucial to the long-term preservation of Curtis Island. We will establish a robust financial foundation, exploring fundraising opportunities and partnerships to support ongoing maintenance and restoration efforts. A collaborative governance model, involving both the Town of Camden and the Curtis Island Lighthouse Foundation, will ensure transparent and inclusive decision-making, balancing public access with the need for preservation.

In essence, our vision for Curtis Island is one of balance—between preservation and access, history and modernity, solitude and community. We are committed to ensuring that Curtis Island remains a cherished asset for future generations, a place where the beauty of nature and the echoes of history can be experienced and appreciated by all. Through collective effort and shared stewardship, the island will continue to be a symbol of Camden's heritage and a sanctuary of peace, reflection, and education.
